PROVIDENCE, RI - The 13th-ranked Brown men's ice hockey team (12-5-4, 10-3-1) increased its ECAC lead to 21 points, while earning a season-sweep over Harvard for the first time since 1978-79 with a 2-1 overtime win over the Harvard Crimson (8-10-2, 6-8-1), Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Senior Nick Ringstad (Fairbanks, AK) scored his team-leading third game-winning goal just 31 seconds into a 5:00 sudden death overtime, clearing the Brown bench as the Bears came back from a 1-0 deficit to earn the win.
Less then 10 minutes into the game, Harvard took a 1-0 lead on a deflected shot that beat senior Hobey Baker candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) at 6:04 of the first period, with the Crimson on a power-play.
After more than a period of scoreless action, Brown knotted the game with a power-play goal if its own, at 13:01 of the second. Senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) sent the puck from behind the net into the slot, were senior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) was waiting to send the puck into the back of the net over Harvard's Dov Grumet-Morris' shoulder. Junior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) also earned an assist on the play.
Despite several chances by both teams in the third period, the outstanding play of both Grumet-Morris and Danis kept the score tied at 1-1, before Ringstad netted the game-winner less than a minute into the overtime. Freshman Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) also earned an assist on the goal.
For the game, Danis finished with 37saves, including 13 in each of the first and second periods. Brown continues action next weekend with two crucial contests at Princeton and Yale.
