Men's Icers Suffer Third Straight 3-1 Loss in Hard-Fought Battle Against Ivy Foe Harvard
Jan. 31, 2003
CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard (13-6-1, 12-3-0) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 42 seconds after Brown (9-9-2, 7-6-1) had tied the game, handing the Bears a 3-1 loss in an ECAC and Ivy League men's ice hockey contest Friday evening at Harvard's Bright Hockey Center.
After nearly an entire period of scoreless action, the Crimson took a 1-0 lead with 4:27 left to play on a power-play goal by Noah Welsh, who fired the puck past Brown's Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) from between the two face-off circles.
Both teams came out on fire in the second period as senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) skate coast-to-coast with the puck taking a shot that bounced out to junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), who knocked the rebound in for his eighth goal of the season just 1:12 into the period.
However, just 42 seconds later, Harvard regained the one-goal advantage as leading scorer Tim Pettit walked in alone and beat Danis.
The Bears had a five-on-three opportunity at the 6:41 mark of the second period, but were unable to capitalize with the extra men, thanks in large part to Harvard's Dov Grumet-Morris, who made eight saves for the Crimson in the two-minute span. Harvard added an empty-netter with 37 seconds left, sealing the 3-1 victory over the Bears, Brown's third straight 3-1 loss.
For the game, Danis stopped a season-high 49 shots. Brown continues action next weekend as the Bears travel to the Capital District for a pair of ECAC games at Union (Friday) and Rensselaer (Saturday).
