LOWELL, MA -Junior Chris Legg (London, ONT) scored the game-winning goal at 7:40 of the final stanza and sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE) made 30 saves in leading Brown (8-9-2, 4-6-2) to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over UMass-Lowell (16-8-1, 8-6-1 HE) in a non-league men's ice hockey contest Tuesday evening at Lowell's Tsongas Arena.
Just 4:17 into the contest, host UMass-Lowell took a 1-0 lead on an Ed McGrane slap shot taken from the right point. The puck it the inside corner of the right post and bounced into the back of the net.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of Lowell for the remainder of the first period and half of the second, before junior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) got Brown on the board with his fifth goal of the season at 11:19. Sophomore Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) fired a slap shot from the left point that rebounded out to freshman Les Haggett (Norwood, NY). Haggett redirected the puck up to Esdale on the right point and the junior fired a slap shot past Lowell's keeper to knot the contest at 1-1.
Legg gave the Bears a 2-1 lead at 7:40 of the final stanza when he skate the puck from end to end and beat Lowell's Cam McCormick one-on-one. Freshman Paul Crosty (Edmonton, ALB) earned an assist on the goal, his second career point.
UMass-Lowell pulled McCormick with 53 seconds remaining, but the Brown defense shutdown Lowell's offense for the final 53 seconds to hold on for the win, their third win over a top-10 program this season.
For the game, Danis finished with 30 saves for the Bears, who continue action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to upstate New York for ECAC games at Colgate and Cornell respectively.
