Bears Fall to #18 Colgate, 5-2

Jan. 28, 2006

HAMILTON, NY - Coming off an emotional overtime loss to #5 Cornell, the Brown men's ice hockey team (3-13-5, 2-9-3) spotted #18 Colgate (15-6-5, 11-2-1) a 3-0 lead in the first 13:00 of play and couldn't recover, falling to the Raiders, 5-2, in an ECAC Hockey League contest on Saturday night at Starr Rink.

The Bears came out buzzing, dominating the flow of the game for the first five minutes, while not allowing a single shot on net. However, in the next 6:26, Brown spotted Colgate a 3-0 lead as the Raiders scored one goal of each kind. Ben Camper's even strength goal at 6:20 started things for Colgate when he knocked in the rebound of a shot from Jon Smyth. Less than 6:00 later, at 12:03, Tyler Burton gave the home team a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal. Kyle Wilson then added an unassisted short-handed tally for the Raiders just 43 seconds later to give Colgate a 3-0 lead at 12:46 of the first.

However, before the end of that power-play chance for the Bears, junior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) capitalized to bring Brown to within two goals at 13:48. Junior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) fed sophomore Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) in the slot and Baier dished the puck to Dersch, who was on the left post. Dersch back-handed the puck into the back of the net, scoring his fourth goal of the year.

The second period was more of the same with Colgate scoring two goals in a span of 4:53 to open up a 5-1 lead on the Bears. Following Peter Bogdanich's power-play goal at 11:48 of the second, sophomore goalie Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) was replaced in net by freshman Mark Sibbald (Ridgeway, ONT).

Brown opened the third period with 1:36 left on a power-play, but couldn't light the lamp despite holding the puck in Colgate's zone for nearly the entire time.

Colgate had two late power-play chances with under six minutes left, but the Brown penalty kill and Sibbald stood strong to keep the Raiders off the board. With just under two minutes left to play, Colgate took a penalty to give the Bears the man advantage for the rest of regulation.

Freshman Eric Slais (Fenton, MO), who had a goal and an assist last night at Cornell, scored the final goal for the Bears with 12 seconds left to play, for the 5-2 final.

D'Alba finished with 14 saves in 31:48 of action, while Sibbald made five saves in 28:12. The Bears return to action next weekend when they host Harvard and Dartmouth in an ECAC Hockey League and Ivy weekend series, Friday and Saturday, February 3rd and 4th. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
