Providence Scores Two Late Goals To Edge Brown, 3-1, In 17th Annual Mayor's Cup Battle
Jan. 28, 2003
PROVIDENCE, RI -Providence (13-11-1) scored a goal with under five minutes to play and added an empty-netter to defeat Brown (9-8-2), 3-1, in the battle for the 17th Annual Mayor's Cup Tuesday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
After a period of scoreless action, the Bears took a 1-0 lead at 10:22 of the second period on a power-play goal by junior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC). Sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) sent the puck from the corner up to junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), who crossed the puck to Ford, at the left point. The junior scored on a one-timer with a slap shot that went in to the right of Nolan Schaefer.
With less than two minutes to play in the period and with the Bears on their fifth power-play of the night, it appeared as if Brown would get a five-on-three opportunity. However, after a rumble involving all nine players on the ice sent the respective players to the penalty boxes with a total of 19 penalties (38 minutes), the Friars ended up with the power-play, taking a five-on-three advantage after Brown's Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) was whistled for roughing with just 14 seconds remaining.
Providence tied the game 18 seconds into the third period with the power-play goal and took a 2-1 lead with 4:19 left to play, scoring what proved to be the game-winner. The Friars added an empty-netter with 33 seconds left in the game, claiming the Mayor's Cup trophy for the second straight year.
For the game, junior Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) stopped 25 shots. Brown's final nine games will all be against ECAC opponents as the Bears head down the stretch hoping for a home playoff spot. The first of the nine games will be this Friday, January 31, when the Bears face travel partner Harvard in Cambridge at 7:00 p.m.
