HAMILTON, NY - Colgate (10-10-4, 4-5-3) connected on the man-advantage three times, while the Brown power play was shut down in five chances, as the Bears (1-14-4, 1-8-3) dropped a 5-0 decision to the Raiders on Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
The Bears again dug themselves a first-period deficit, as Colgate struck twice in the final 10 minutes of the period to grab a 2-0 lead heading into the second. Just 31 seconds after killing their first of three first-period Brown power plays, the Raiders grabbed a 1-0 lead when Jesse Winchester crossed the puck to a wide-open Mark Anderson and he fired it into the partially open net at 10:25.
The Bears went on the power play just 19 seconds later, but were unable to convert, and then went up again at 16:25, but couldn't break through the Colgate defense, generating just two shots over all three power plays.
The Raiders earned their first man-advantage of the night just seven seconds after Brown's third chance expired and needed less than a minute to make it a 2-0 game when Jason Williams beat sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) with a shot from the top of the right face-off circle with 31 seconds left in the period.
Colgate increased its lead to 3-0 5:09 into the second period with another power play goal, as Winchester collected the puck in the slot and beat Rosen glove-side low with a back-hander.
The Bears then went up on their fourth power play at 9:44, but were again shut down, before taking a penalty of their own with 41 seconds left on the man-advantage. Just 20 seconds later, Brown was assessed another penalty, giving Colgate a four-on-three for 21 seconds and then a five-on-three for 1:19.
The Bears' defense clamped down and prevented the Raiders from gaining a bigger lead with several blocked shots during the odd-man situation and several saves from Rosen. However, Colgate added its fourth of the night with just 28 seconds left in the period when David McIntyre's shot from the top of the left face-off circle beat Rosen to the far corner.
McIntyre picked up his second goal and third point of the night 1:23 into the third period, as Colgate increased its lead to 5-0 with its third power play goal on six chances.
Rosen finished with 35 saves, while Mark Dekanich stopped all 18 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Brown returns home next weekend when it hosts Harvard and Dartmouth in a pair of ECAC Hockey and Ivy games. Friday night's game against the Crimson, originally scheduled for 7:00, has been moved to 7:30 to accommodate the women's game between the Bears and Harvard, which will now be played in Providence at 4:00. Saturday, Brown returns to action in an afternoon game against Dartmouth. Fans are encouraged to "White Out" Friday's game by wearing white shirts, and the first 150 Brown students to enter Saturday's game will receive a free Wachusett Mountain lift ticket. Tickets are available by calling (401) 863-2773.
