Vokes and Smith Help Lead Bears to 4-1 Win Over Colgate
Jan. 23, 2009
HAMILTON, NY - Freshman Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) scored a goal and added an assist and senior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) tallied two assists to help lead the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-12-4, 2-7-2) to a 4-1 victory over Colgate (6-12-5, 1-7-3) on Friday evening at Starr Rink. Freshman Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) picked up his first career win with 32 saves, as the Bears earned their first victory over Colgate in Hamilton since February 19, 1993.
The two teams played a fast-paced first period, with the Bears holding a 14-11 advantage in shots on goal and both goalies matching each other save-for-save. The Raiders nearly took a 1-0 lead at 6:08 but David McIntyre hit the crossbar following a defensive zone turnover by the Bears.
Midway through the period, it was Brown that nearly took the 1-0 lead when sophomore Jesse Fratkin (Burnaby, BC) had Alex Evin beat to the far corner from the right face-off circle, but his low shot glanced off the post, keeping the score knotted at 0-0 at 10:52.
The Bears went up on their third power-play chance of the game just 28 seconds into the second period and freshman Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) gave Brown a 1-0 lead when his shot from the left point beat a screened Evin at 1:05.
However, Colgate responded eight seconds later when Tom Riley beat Clemente glove-side high from the top of the right face-off circle to tie the score at 1-1.
The Raiders nearly gained a 2-1 advantage at 11:35, but hit the post for the second time of the evening. Then it was Brown that had a chance to take the 2-1 lead, but Evin made back-to-back saves on junior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) and Smith in the 14th minute to keep the score tied at one.
With 47 seconds remaining in the period, the Bears went up on their fifth power-play chance of the night and Smith needed just 35 seconds to score his first career goal and give Brown a 2-1 lead.
After a Colgate shot hit a bracket on the glass, the rebound came out to Vokes. Realizing time was winding down, Vokes skated into the zone along the right wing and hit classmate Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) with a cross-ice pass. Slais waited for Evin to drop and passed to Smith, who buried his one-timer from the right edge of the crease, giving Brown a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
Junior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) increased Brown's lead to 3-1 at 13:58 of the third when he collected the puck behind the net and was stopped on a wrap-around attempt. However, he collected his own rebound and skated in across the net around traffic and beat Evin with a wrist-shot from the right side of the net.
The raiders pulled Evin with 1:33 remaining in favor of the extra attacker and senior Mike Stuart (Rome, NY) clinched the victory when he intercepted a Colgate pass in the neutral zone and fired the puck into the empty net for the 4-1 win.
The Bears return to action tomorrow evening when they travel to Ithaca to face Cornell in a 7:00 p.m. game.
