Bears Claim Mayor's Cup Title with 5-1 Win over PC in the 19th Annual Battle for the Cup

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (9-6-3) scored five straight goals en route to a 5-1 win over cross-town rival Providence College (6-14-3) in the 19th Annual Mayor's Cup on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium. The win gave Brown its first victory in the Mayor's Cup series since the 2000-2001 season, snapping Providence's record of 2-0-1 in the past three seasons, when the Bears earned a 5-1 win at Meehan.
Coming off Tuesday's 0-0 tie, the Bears scored their first goal in over 75:00 of action when Sean Hurley (Rutand, VT) gave Brown a 1-0 lead at 15:20 of the first period. He skate the puck through the neutral zone and into the PC end before taking a low shot on PC's Tyler Sims. Sims saved the original shot, but Hurley knocked in his own rebound for his second goal of the year.
The Bears exploded for three goals in the second period, starting with junior Joe Bauer's (Apple Valley, MN) second of the year. Bauer skate into the zone and dropped the puck for junior Rugo Santini (Winchester, MA) had his shot saved by Sims, but Bauer knocked in the rebound for the 2-0 Brown lead at 2:29 of the period.
Senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) gave the Bears a 3-0 lead just 1:30 later. Junior Pete LeCain (Bridgewater, NS) connected with Meech at center ice and Meech held the puck from the blue-line, skating into the corner, before wrapping around in front of the net. He waited patiently for Sims to drop, before roofing the puck into the top right corner of the net.
At 11:27 of the period, LeCain ended Sims' night with his first career goal. Freshman Seth Seidman (Milton, MA) dropped the puck for LeCain at the blueline and he skate in, before taking a shot that deflected into the back of the net, off Sims' pads.
Freshman Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) increased the Bears' lead to 5-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 10:57, with assists going to sophomores Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) and Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE).
Chris Chaput ended freshman Adam D'Alba's shutout bid with 18 seconds remaining in the game when he scored on the power-play.
In net for Brown, D'Alba stopped 21 shots, while Sims and Mike Wolfe combined for 19 saves for Providence. The Bears resume ECACHL action next weekend when they begin the stretch run in a pair of ECACHL and Ivy League games at Yale and Princeton.
