Bears and #15 River Hawks Play to Scoreless Tie, Brown's First Since 1898
Jan. 18, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (8-6-3) and #15 UMass-Lowell played to a scoreless tie in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at Meehan Auditorium. The 0-0 tie was just the second in Brown hockey history and the first since 1898 when Brown and Yale played to a 0-0 draw on February 18th, the Bears' fourth game of hockey.
Brown started the game off with several chances in the first period, outshooting UMass-Lowell, 7-3, during the first 20:00 and not allowing a shot on goal until the 16:00 mark of the period.
Both teams had chances in the second, but the strong play of goaltenders Adam D'Alba for Brown and Peter Vetri for Lowell at the other end kept the score knotted at zero headed into the third.
Junior Rugo Santini (Winchester, MA) had a great opportunity in the third, facing a wide open net, but his shot hit the pad of Vetri to keep Brown off the board. At the other end of the ice, and with 1:49 left in the game, D'Alba slid across the net from right to left and made a stop on Jason Tejchma, who was just 12 feet away from the net.
The two teams headed into overtime, which the Bears' dominated, but neither team could score and the contest ended the way it began, 0-0.
In net for Brown, D'Alba stopped 25 shots to earn his second shutout of the season, while Vetri and Christopher Davidson, who played the first period, combined for 25 saves. The Bears continue the end of the non-league schedule this Saturday when they host Providence in the 19th Annual Mayor's Cup. With a 4-1-1 record in non-conference games this season, the Bears wrap-up their non-league schedule against the Friars.
