Kirley and Danis Lead Men's Ice Hockey Past Princeton, 3-1

Jan. 12, 2002

PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) scored two goals while sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE) stopped 20 of 21 shots in leading Brown (5-8-2, 4-6-2) to a 3-1 victory over visiting Princeton (6-13-0, 5-7-0) in an ECAC and Ivy Men's Ice Hockey contest at Meehan Auditorium.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period when junior Chris Legg (London, ONT) knocked in the rebound of a Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) shot. Swon, who earned his first collegiate point with the assist, went flying into the air after taking the shot, but Legg was on the doorstep to send the puck home and give Brown a 1-0 lead. Senior Chris Dirkes (Marblehead, MA) also earned an assist on the goal, the defenseman's second point of the season.

With momentum still in favor of Brown, the hosts wasted little time in taking a 2-0 lead early in the second stanza. From behind the net, Legg hit Kirley with a pass just in front of Princeton's net and Kirley one-timed the puck past Princeton's David Stathos (Longueuil, QUE), giving Brown a two-goal lead at 4:06 of the second. Junior Tye Korbl (Goffstown, NH) also earned an assist on the play, his third point in as many games.

With Brown still leading 2-0 late in the second and Danis just 10 minutes away from his first career shutout, Princeton scored its lone goal of the game to come to within 2-1 with 10:15 remaining.

The Tigers pulled Stathos for an extra skater with one minute left, but Danis and the defense shut Princeton down for the remainder and as time expired, Kirley added an empty net goal to secure the win. Sophomore leading scorer Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), who has now tallied five points in as many games, and junior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) each earned assists on the goal.

Danis made 20 saves in net, earning his second victory of the season. The Bears take a break from ECAC games while Harvard is on exam break, but continue action next Friday when they host #1 St. Cloud State in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
