PROVIDENCE, RI - The ECAC leading Brown men's ice hockey team (8-4-3, 8-3-1) suffered its first home loss of the season, as Colgate (9-7-3, 4-3-0) defeated the Bears, 3-1, earning its second straight win this season over Bruno.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead at 13:54 of the first period on a goal by Adam Mitchell, who knocked in the third shot on senior Hobey Baker candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) from point blank range.
However, the Bears evened things up midway through the second period, when senior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) blasted a shot from the top of the left face-off circle past Colgate's Steve Silverthorn. The power-play goal was assisted by junior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) and freshman leading scorer Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT).
Colgate would get one more before the period was over, which would prove to be the game-winner. The Raiders' Paul Kelley fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle and his shot bounced off a stick, deflecting the puck just past Danis.
The Bears killed two back-to-back power-plays during the first eight minutes of the third period and then failed to convert on two of their own power-play opportunities in the final five minutes.
Brown pulled Danis with 55 seconds remaining and the Raiders added an empty-netter to claim the 3-1 win with 36 seconds left on the clock.
Danis finished with 23 saves, including 11 in the third period, while Silverthorn stopped 24 shots for Colgate. The Bears resume action tomorrow night, hosting Cornell, which defeated Harvard tonight, 5-3, in a crucial ECAC match-up. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
