Bears Play Third Straight Over-Time Game, Tie Princeton, 2-2
Jan. 7, 2006
Princeton, NJ - The Brown men's ice hockey team (2-10-3, 2-6-1) battled back from a one-goal deficit two times to earn a 2-2 tie with Princeton (5-12-1, 2-9-1) in an ECAC Hockey League and Ivy contest on Saturday evening at Baker Rink. It was the Bears' third straight overtime contest, as Brown has earned a 0-1-2 record during those three contests.
After a fast-paced start to the game, which featured few whistles, the Tigers struck first, scoring on a power-play opportunity at the 11:55 mark. After the Bears had successfully killed a too many men on the ice call, junior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) took a 5:00 major hitting from behind call. With the face-off in Brown's end, the Tigers won the draw and Brett Wilson's shot from the face-off circle deflected off a Brown player and into the back of the net just four seconds into the man advantage.
With Princeton still on the power-play for 4:56, the Tigers were whistled for too many men with 2:51 left in the man-advantage, setting up a four-on-four situation. With just over 40 seconds left in the four-on-four play, the Tigers were whistled for another penalty, giving Brown a 4x3 opportunity. Sophomore Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) netted his fourth goal of the year when his shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle went behind Princeton's B.J. Sklapsky and into the goal mouth, where it was tipped into the back of the net.
The Tigers increased their lead to 2-1 at 3:23 of the second on another power-play goal, but again Brown battled back to tie the contest. With each team skating four players, sophomore David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) fed the puck to sophomore Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) and Prough found junior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) skating along the right wing. Roux beat his defender, and fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that beat Sklapsky stick-side, tying the game at 2-2 at the 12:22 mark.
With the two teams still tied late in the game, the Bears nearly went ahead with just over six minutes left, but freshman Matt Vokes' (Auburn, MA) shot from the center of the slot was saved by Sklapsky to keep the game tied at two. Brown had a power-play chance with 4:34 left to play, but the Bears were unable to net the go-ahead goal as they entered overtime for the third straight game.
Both Princeton and Brown had chances to score in the extra session, but neither could find the back of the net as the two teams, tied for last in the ECACHL settled for a 2-2 tie.
Sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) finished with 27 saves in net for Brown. The Bears return to action on Tuesday, January 10th, when they host UConn in a 7:00 p.m. non-league game.
