NORTHFORD, CT - The Brown men's ice hockey team (2-10-2, 2-6-0) scored two third-period goals to come back and tie Quinnipiac (10-10-0, 4-8-0) late in the third, but the Bobcats scored just 1:01 into the overtime period, handing the Bears a 3-2 loss. It was Brown's first ECAC Hockey League action since dropping a 5-1 decision to Yale on December 2.
The Bears fell behind early for the sixth time this season when the Bobcats scored on their first power-play chance of the game just 1:53 into the first period. With freshman Mike Stuart (Rome, NY) in the box for holding, Jamie Bates, camped out on the right post, redirected a feed from Brian Leitch to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead just six seconds into the man advantage.
The Bears were whistled for two more penalties in a span of 3:46, but the Brown penalty killing unit stood strong for both of those Quinnipiac power-plays, holding the score at 1-0. Just after Brown's first power-play chance had ended, Leitch came out of the penalty box and broke in behind the Bears' defense, skating in all alone on Brown sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL). D'Alba was up to the task as stopped Leitch to keep Brown within one goal with 9:00 left in the period.
The Bobcats took back-to-back penalties in the 12th minute, giving Brown a 5x3 advantage for 1:18. However, despite several close chances the Bears were unable to find the back of the net.
Quinnipiac increased its lead to 2-0 at 5:43 of the second, scoring for the second time on the power-play, 1:23 into an interference call on freshman Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN). The goal was scored in a similar fashion as the Bobcats first goal. This time Mark Van Vliet was camped out on the left post, and he redirected a feed from David Marshall past D'Alba.
Sophomore Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) brought the Bears to within one at 6:21 of the third when he scored his first goal of the year off a pass from sophomore David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI). With the Bears on a power-play, sophomore Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) won the draw to the right of Quinnipiac's Bud Fisher. After controlling the puck, he passed to Robertson at the left point. Robertson sent the puck to Poli at the opposite point and Poli one-timed the puck into the back of the net.
With Brown still trailing late in the game, the Bears pulled D'Alba with 1:13 left in regulation for the extra attacker. Just six seconds later, junior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) knotted the game at 2-2 with 1:07 left to play off a pass from sophomore leading scorer Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) to send the game into overtime.
Brown was outshot 3-0 in the overtime and David Marshall scored the game-winner just 1:01 into the extra period.
D'Alba finished with a season-high 39 saves in net for Brown, including all 16 he faced in the third period. The Bears return to action tomorrow night when they face ECACHL and Ivy rival Princeton at 7:00 p.m. in New Jersey.
