Men’s Hockey Falls at No. 11 Providence, 5-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ben Mirageas recorded three points for No. 11 Providence College as the Brown men's hockey team fell on the road, 5-0, in the 32nd annual Mayor's Cup Wednesday night at Schneider Arena.  

Providence retained the Mayor's Cup to improve to 13-7-1 on the season. Brown moved to 5-8-1 overall.

Hayden Hawkey stopped all 15 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Sophomore Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) registered 28 saves for the Bears.

Greg Printz put the Friars on the board seven minutes into the contest. Brandon Duhaime skated behind the net and sent a pass in front, where Printz fired a one timer past Nieto for the early lead.

Brown's best chance of the first period came with 7.7 seconds left in the frame, but Hawkey stopped a bid by Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) to preserve the lead. PC outshot Brown in the first, 10-7.

Providence added a power-play goal at 7:57 in the middle frame, when Wilkins scored during a delayed penalty for the two-goal advantage.

Brian Pinho stretched the Providence lead to three goals at 7:11 in the third period as he rushed to the net and beat Nieto with a wraparound tally. Scott Conway and Mirageas added two more goals in the final five minutes of the contest.

Nolan Aibel (Brookville, N.Y.) led the Bears with four shots.

Brown will visit New Hampshire on Saturday at 7 PM.
