Men’s Hockey Falls at No. 19 Union, 3-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) scored late in the third period, but it was not enough to climb back from an early deficit, as the Brown men's hockey team fell at No. 19 Union, 3-1, Friday night at Messa Rink.

Union improved to 9-6-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the ECAC. Brown dropped to 4-6-0, 3-6-0. Brown outshot the Dutchmen, 32-28.

Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 25 saves for the Bears. Jake Kupsky had 31 saves to earn the win.

Ryan Scarfo gave Union the early lead at 7:56 in the first period. Brown was able to kill off the first power play of the game, but Scarfo tucked a shot past Nieto just after the penalty expired for the 1-0 lead. Brown went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in the opening period.

Anthony Rinaldi added another goal for the Dutchmen at 6:16 in the second, when he snapped a shot from the left circle for the two-goal advantage at the second intermission.

Union made it a three-goal game early in the third period after both teams were called for roughing penalties, as Vas Kolias skated around the goal, found open space and sent a shot past Nieto.

Marchin put the Bears on the board at 14:28 with his third tally of the season. After Brady Schoo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) blasted a shot from the point, the rebound bounced off the skate of Tim Lappin (St. Charles, Ill.) and out to Marchin in front, who beat Kupsky to trim the deficit to tow goals.

Brown took out Nieto with 1:50 remaining for the extra skater, but the Bears were unable to find the back of the net, as the home side held on for the win.

Brown will visit Rensselaer tomorrow night at 7 PM.
