Men’s Hockey Falls at No. 12 Cornell, 5-3

ITHACA, N.Y. – Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) and Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) scored consecutive goals to trim the deficit to one early in the third, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 12 Cornell, 5-3, in Sunday's ECAC Hockey contest at Lynah Rink.

Cornell improved to 15-6-3 overall and 10-4-3 in the ECAC, while Brown dropped to 4-18-2, 3-13-1 in the conference.

Dodd added an assist for his first career multiple-point game, while senior captain Andrew Doane (Holliston, Mass.) also scored for the Bears. Anthony Angello paced the Big Red with two goals.

Mitch Gillam made 23 stops for Cornell to pick up the win. Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) recorded 26 saves in the loss for the Bears.

Brown struck first just 3:28 into the first period when Doane notched his second goal of the season. Dodd fired a shot from the right circle, and after Gillam made the initial save, Doane was there for to clean up the rebound and make it 1-0, Bears. Freshman Jack Gessert (Novi, Mich.) also picked up an assist on the play.

Cornell answered at 8:56 when Matt Buckles tapped home a rebound right in front to even the score, 1-1, midway through the period.

Angello pushed the Big Red in front at 13:01 as he skated through the slot and beat Nieto glove high for the one-goal advantage at the end of the first period. Cornell outshot Brown, 12-11, in the opening frame.

Cornell extended its lead with a pair of goals in the second half of the middle frame. After Angello tacked on his second of the game at 11:15, scoring on a one-timer from the right circle, Mitch Vanderlaan scored at 15:02 for the 4-1 advantage.

Brown responded just over a minute later at 16:12, when Dodd redirected a shot by Joe Maguire (Dix Hills, N.Y.) past Gillam to trim the lead to two heading into the third period. Josh McArdle (Roscoe, Ill.) also earned an assist on Dodd's goal.

Brown carried over its momentum into the third period as Lafferty scored a shorthanded goal 2:17 into the stanza for his tenth of the season. Lafferty stole the puck from behind the Big Red net and finished in front, giving the Bears their fourth shorthanded goal in the last six games.

Cornell halted the Brown comeback at 6:56 when Trevor Yates blasted a shot from the left circle that trickled past Nieto for the two-goal lead.

Brown pulled Nieto for the extra skater after a timeout with 3:19 remaining, but the Big Red kept the Bears out of the net to secure the win.

Brown will host Dartmouth on Friday at 7 PM.
