Men’s Hockey Outlasted at Colgate, 2-1

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) evened the score early in the third period, but Jacob Panetta notched the game-winning goal in the final minute, as the Brown men's hockey team fell at Colgate, 2-1, in ECAC action Saturday night at Class of 1965 Arena.

Colgate snapped a four-game winless skid against the Bears to improve to 7-17-5 overall and 5-10-2 in the conference. Brown falls to 4-18-2, 3-13-1 in the ECAC.

Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 25 saves in the loss for the Bears, while Colton Point stopped 20 shots on the other end.

Brown earned the first power play of the game with 57 seconds remaining of a scoreless first period, but the Raiders killed off the remainder of the penalty at the start of the second to keep the Bears off the board.

After the two teams killed back-to-back penalties midway through the second period, the Raiders had consecutive power plays to close out the frame, but the Bears held the home side at bay to keep the game scoreless heading into the third period. Brown outshot Colgate, 12-10, in the middle stanza.

Evan Peterson scored the first goal of the game at 4:49 in the third period to give the home team the one-goal lead.

Nevertheless, Brown answered right back as Lafferty scored 39 seconds later with his ninth goal of the season. Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) moved the puck behind the Colgate net and found Lafferty right in front for the one-timer to even the score. Rookie Nolan Aibel (Brookeville, N.Y.) also earned an assist on the play.

Despite a sequence of six combined penalties midway through the period, including a five-minute major and game misconduct by Colgate's Ken Citron, the two teams were scoreless heading into the final minute of play.

Panetta scored the game-winning goal with 46 seconds left in regulation as he tapped home the rebound to push the Raiders in front. Brown then pulled Nieto for the extra skater, but Colgate blocked the final two shots to secure the win.

Brown will visit No. 12 Cornell tomorrow at 4 PM.
