PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) recorded 31 saves, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 19 Quinnipiac, 1-0, in Friday's ECAC Hockey contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Quinnipiac improved to 15-11-2 overall and 9-6-1 in the ECAC, while Brown dropped to 4-17-1, 3-12-0 in the conference.
Quinnipiac's Bo Pieper scored the only goal of the contest in the first period. Brown made in it interesting with 15 shots in the final frame, but Andrew Shortridge stopped made 21 stops overall to secure the win.
Pieper put the Bobcats on the board nearly seven minutes into the opening frame as he beat Nieto stick side with a shot from the left circle for the early lead.
Nieto made nine stops in a scoreless second period to keep the Bears within a goal heading into the third frame. Brown was called for the first penalty of the game with 1:34 left in the second, before the penalty kill unit kept the visitors off the board, staving off the remainder of the attack at the start of the third period.
The Bears generated offense during their third power play of the period with five shots on target. Brown continued to attack during the remainder of the frame, and put five shots on net after pulling Nieto with 1:47 remaining, but Shortridge turned away a final barrage of shots to seal the shutout.
Brown will host Princeton tomorrow at 4 PM.
