Men’s Hockey Falls at Yale, 4-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) gave the Brown men's hockey team an early lead with the first goal of the game, but Yale responded with three unanswered and added an empty netter as the Bears fell, 4-1, Saturday at Ingalls Rink.

Yale improves to 10-7-4 overall and 6-5-3 in the ECAC after sweeping the home-and-home weekend series. Brown drops to 4-16-1 on the season and 3-11-0 in the conference.

The two teams were even at one goal apiece after two periods before the Bulldogs scored three goals in the third to seal the win. Sam Tucker made 24 saves to pick up the victory, while rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 22 stops on the other end.

Corcoran put Brown on the board with a shorthanded goal at 17:45 in the first period for his team-high 13th tally of the season. He took advantage of a turnover at the blue line and rifled a shot from the slot, giving the Bears their second shorthanded goal in as many games.

Yale answered back 40 seconds later when Ted Hart notched a power-play goal at 18:25 to make it 1-1 at the end of the first period. Brown outshot the Bulldogs, 11-7, in the frame.

Brown outshot Yale, 9-7, during a scoreless second period. The Bears benefited from consecutive power-play opportunities midway through the stanza, but the Bulldogs limited the visitors to just one combined shot to maintain the even score.

Evan Smith gave Yale the one-goal lead just 1:40 into the third period. Billy Sweezey slid a pass to the point, where Smith blasted a one-timer through traffic and into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) had a strong bid in front during a power play with seven minutes remaining, but Tucker covered up the one-timer to help the Bulldogs kill the penalty. Yale stretched its lead to two goals two minutes later at 15:09 when Frankie DiChiara beat Nieto with a shot from the right circle for the two-goal advantage.

Smith added an empty-net goal with 1:20 remaining for his second tally of the game.

Yale edged Brown in shots, 26-25.
