Men’s Hockey Ousted at No. 6 Harvard, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made a career-high 39 saves, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 6 Harvard, 3-0, in ECAC action Friday night at the Bright-Landry Center.

Harvard (12-5-1, 8-4-1) took a two-goal lead into the third period and added an empty-net goal to seal the win. Brown dropped to 3-14-1 overall and 2-9-0 in the conference.

Nieto stopped 39 shots for the Bears, including all 15 he faced in the third period, while Merrick Madsen recorded 26 saves for the shutout win. Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.), Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.), Andrew Doane (Holliston, Mass.), Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and Zack Pryzbek (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) paced the Bears with three shots apiece.

Harvard struck first at 7:56 in the opening period when Frederic Gregoire scored his first career goal. Gregoire sent a pass from behind the net that bounced off a Brown skater and past Nieto for the lead, 1-0. Nieto made 14 saves in the opening period to preserve the one-goal heading into the first intermission.

Brown opened the second period with a 7-2 edge in shots, but could not take advantage of an early power play to find the equalizer. The Crimson responded with a power-play goal at 10:45 from Nathan Krusko, who redirected a shot in front for the two-goal lead.

The two teams traded back-to-back unsuccessful power plays at the end of the period, while Nieto made a timely glove save to deny Alexander Kerfoot and keep it a two-goal game.

Brown was able to generate solid bids and put shots on net during a power play midway through the third period, but Madsen kept the Bears off the board, stopping consecutive shots early on in the man-advantage to maintain the shutout.

After Brown pulled Nieto for the extra skater, Tyler Moy added an empty-net goal at 18:27 to secure the victory.

Brown will visit Dartmouth tomorrow at 7 PM.
