PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – Charlie Corcoran scored four goals and Sam Lafferty netted the equalizer late in the third period as the Brown men's hockey team drew even with Arizona State, 8-8, in the opening day of the Desert Hockey Classic Friday at the Prescott Valley Event Center.
Brown (3-9-1) topped ASU in a 3-on-3 double overtime period on a goal by Max Willman to advance to the championship game of the tournament, but the game officially ended in a tie. Brown will meet UConn in the title game tomorrow at 6 PM EST.
Corcoran scored Brown's first three goals of the game to secure his first career hat trick and added the fourth tally midway through the third period. He also added an assist for the five-point effort. Max Willman and Lafferty had one goal and three assists apiece for the four-point performances.
The two teams combined for six goals in the third period, alternating the final five goals, before Lafferty notched the equalizer with 15 seconds remaining to force overtime and the eventual draw. Tommy Marchin, Willman and Corcoran also scored for the Bears in the third frame.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, Willman found the back of the net on a feed from Lafferty during the following 3-on-3 double overtime frame to send the Bears into the championship game.
Robbie Baillargeon put the Sun Devils on the board midway through the first period, but Corcoran answered with his first goal of the period at 12:34 on the power play, using a nice move right in front to backhand a shot past Levin.
After Jakob Stridsberg pushed Arizona State back in front late in the period at 17:30, Corcoran netted his second of the frame 23 seconds later. The junior corralled a pass in the right circle and blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and fell down into the net. Brown outshot ASU, 9-5, in the opening period.
Corcoran completed the hat trick at 2:58 in the second period with his second power-play goal of the game, as he fired a shot from the left circle past Levin for the 3-2 lead. Tyler Bird tacked on another tally less than two minutes later with a shorthanded goal, the team's first of the season, for the two-goal advantage.
Nevertheless, ASU responded with four goals by four different scorers to close out the frame, including two over the final 19 seconds of the period for the two-goal lead at the second intermission.
Facing a two-goal deficit midway through the third period, Willman and Corcoran netted consecutive goals within a 30-second span to even the score, 6-6.
After ASU's Louie Rowe and Marchin swapped goals, Stridsberg scored his second of the game to give the Sun Devils the lead with 1:15 remaining, setting up Lafferty's equalizer with 15 seconds remaining.
Brown outshot ASU, 35-22.
The Bears will play UConn in the championship game of the Desert Hockey Classic tomorrow at 6 PM EST.
