Men’s Hockey Skates Past Rensselaer, 6-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore defenseman Conner Wynne (Pomona, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period as the Brown men's hockey team downed Rensselaer, 6-3, in Saturday afternoon's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown improves to 3-9-0 overall and 2-6-0 in the ECAC, while RPI falls to 3-16-1, 1-9-0.

Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.), Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) and Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) each finished with one goal and one assist, while Brady Schoo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also scored to round out the six different goal scorers. Joe Maguire (Dix Hills, N.Y.) finished with a pair of points behind two helpers.

Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 19 saves for his second win of the season. Cam Hackett made 15 saves in the loss, while Chase Perry also made 13 stops. 

Lafferty opened up the scoring at 8:23 with his third goal of the season. After Perry turned away a shot by Corcoran, Lafferty scooped up the puck in front and used a backhanded shot to push the home side in front, 1-0. Senior Andrew Doane (Holliston, Mass.) earned an assist on the play.

Jimmy DeVito answered back for Rensselaer with a goal at 13:02 to even the score, 1-1.

Brown regained the lead at 16:40 in the first when Middleton scored his first goal of the season. After Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) and Maguire kept the play alive in the offensive zone, Middleton skated into the left circle and fired an angled shot that went under the pad of Perry and into the net. Brown outshot RPI, 13-6, in the opening 20 minutes.

Schoo gave the Bears a two-goal lead just 2:39 into the second frame with his first career tally. The sophomore defenseman fired a shot from in front of the blue line that hit Hackett and trickled past the goal line. Maguire and Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) picked up assists on the play.

Rensselaer responded with a pair of power-play goals to even the score, as Riley Bourbonnais and Mike Prapavessis both found the back of the net to even the score, 3-3, heading into the third frame.  

Wynne broke a tie game at 11:32 in the third period, as he blasted a shot from the high slot over the shoulder of Hackett for his second of the season.

Corcoran and Beaudoin added a pair of empty-net goals during the final minute to the seal the win.

Brown outshot Rensselaer, 34-22.

The Bears are off until December 30-31 when they travel to Arizona State for the Desert Hockey Classic.
