Corcoran Scores Twice in Men’s Hockey’s 3-1 Win at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) netted a pair of goals to lead the Brown men's hockey team past Army West Point, 3-1, in Saturday evening's non-conference contest at Tate Rink.

Brown improved to 2-8-0 overall, while Army West Point dropped to 7-6-1 on the season. Brown outshot West Point, 35-23.

Corcoran scored twice to improve his team high goal lead to six on the season. Fellow junior Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) had one goal and two assists for the three-point effort.

Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped 22 shots, including all 11 in the third period, to pick up his first career win. Parker Gahagen made 32 stops on the other end for the Black Knights.

Army benefited from an early power after a Brown penalty just 12 seconds into the contest, but the Bears stepped up and held the home team to without a shot on target.

The Bears drew first blood when Corcoran scored at 9:39 for his fifth goal of the season. Junior Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) sent a centering pass from the right side, where Corcoran blasted a one-timer past Gahagen and then crashed into the net after the goal, securing the early advantage. Lafferty also picked up an assist on the play.

Brown outshot the Black Knights by an 11-8 margin in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second period, Army made the most of a 4-on-3 power play after three combined penalties during a 16-second span, as Zach Evancho scored at 8:43 to even the score at 1-1.

Brown responded at 16:07 when Corcoran netted his second tally of the game and sixth of the season. Parker Gahagen turned away Ben Tegtmeyer's shot from the point, but Corcoran hit home the rebound in front, giving the visitors a one-goal lead at the second intermission.

Brown outshot the Black Knights, 13-5 in the middle period.

Nieto stopped all 11 Army shots in the third period, including a pair of big stops to deny Michael Wilson and Alex Wilkinson during the final five minutes to preserve the lead.

Lafferty added an empty-net goal with 50 seconds remaining for his second tally of the season to seal the victory.

Brown will play host to Union (12/9) and RPI (12/10) next weekend.
