Men’s Hockey Falls to Maine, 5-1, in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine. – Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) scored late in the second period to cut the lead to one, but Maine scored three goals in the final frame, as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Black Bears, 5-1, Saturday night at Cross Insurance Arena.

Maine improved to 5-7-3 on the season, while Brown fell to 1-8-0 overall.

Lafferty recorded his team high ninth point with his first tally of the season. Cedric Lacriox paced Maine with two goals as one of three players with two-point games.

Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 24 saves in the loss, before Connor Maher (Marshfield, Mass.) came in and recorded three saves midway through the third. Rob McGovern registered 28 saves for the Black Bears.

Brown opened with a strong half of the first period, outshooting the Black Bears, 8-2, but Maine answered with a series of shots in the following ten minutes of action to even the stanza. Brown led in shots, 11-10, in the opening scoreless period.

Maine opened the scoring at 6:03 in the second period. After consecutive Brown penalties, Maine took advantage of the 5-on-3 power play when Rob Michel buried a shot to make it 1-0.

The Black Bears had an opportunity at the end of a penalty, as Eric Schurhamer came out of the box in stride for the breakaway, but Ernst denied the bid to preserve the one-goal deficit.

Cedric Lacroix gave the Black Bears a two-goal lead at 17:45 in the second period, but Lafferty answered back with 30 seconds left in the frame, scoring his first goal of the season. The junior came off the bench and skated through the Maine defense down the left side, ending with a nice move right in front to trim the deficit back to one, 2-1.
