Men’s Hockey Falls at No. 20 SLU, 7-2

CANTON, N.Y. – Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich) and Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) scored second-period goals, but the Brown men's hockey team could not climb back from an early deficit, as the Bears fell at No. 20 St. Lawrence, 7-2, Saturday night at Appleton Arena.

SLU (8-4-2, 5-0-1 ECAC) scored four power-play goals, including three during a five-minute major starting at the end of the first, while Mike Marnell scored four goals for the Saints. Brown dropped to 1-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the conference.

Kyle Hayton made 24 saves for the Saints in the win. Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) posted a season-high 32 saves in the loss.

St. Lawrence notched three goals in the second half of the opening period, starting at 12:12, when Michael Ederer converted a one-timer for the one-goal lead.

Brown managed to kill a pair of penalties to preserve the one-goal deficit, but the Saints then took advantage of a five-minute major at the end of the stanza, scoring a pair of power-play goals. After Marnell scored at 17:26, Drew Smolcynski scored right in front with one minute remaining for the three-goal advantage at the first intermission.

St. Lawrence carried over its power play into the second period and made the most of the opportunity as Marnell scored 28 seconds into the frame.

Marchin put the Bears on the board at 7:33 with his first of the season. Andrew Doane (Holliston, Mass.) found Marchin in the neutral zone, before the sophomore skated into SLU territory and blasted a shot from the left circle past Hayton, trimming the lead to three at 4-1.

SLU responded at 14:09 when Marnell notched a short-handed goal to secure the hat trick and increase the lead back to four, 5-1.

After a pair of SLU penalties late in the period, the Bears took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play, as Willman scored with five seconds remaining to pull the Bears within three heading into the third period. Brown outshot the Saints, 14-7, in the second stanza.

Brown had a chance midway through the third period, when Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) rifled a shot that was saved by Hayton, before the puck trickled through and slid up to the line. After video review, Brown was awarded a penalty shot after it was determined that SLU covered the puck, but Lafferty's bid hit the pipe on the attempt.

From there, Jacob Pritchard added a power-play goal and Marnell tacked on his fourth of the game to round out the period.

Brown will visit Maine on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Portland's Cross Insurance Arena.
