Men’s Hockey Edged at No. 20 Union, 6-4

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Brown men's hockey team scored three straight third period goals to take a one-goal lead, but No. 20 Union responded with three unanswered tallies as the Bears fell to the Dutchmen, 6-4, in Saturday night's ECAC contest at Messa Rink.

Brown moves to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the ECAC, while Union improves to 8-2-1 on the season and 4-0 in the conference.

Junior Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) paced Brown with two goals, while Zack Pryzbek (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) and Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) also scored for the Bears. Junior Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) recorded a game-high three assists and sophomore defenseman Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) also added a pair of helpers. 

Rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped 26 shots in the loss, while Alex Sakellaropoulos made 33 saves for the Dutchmen in the win.

Sebastian Vidmar and Spencer Foo both scored power-play goals in the first period at 12:53 and 18:45, respectively, to give the Dutchmen a two-goal lead at the first intermission. Brown outshot Union, 12-10, in the opening stanza.

Brown responded early in the second period when Pryzbek scored at 2:39 for his first of the season. Josh McArdle (Roscoe, Ill.) and Jack Gessert (Novi, Mich.) picked up assists on the play.

Mike Vecchione scored his 14th goal of the season midway through the period to give the home team a two-goal advantage at the second intermission.

The Bears roared back with three straight goals to open the third, starting at 4:42 when Corcoran scored on the power play, trimming the lead to one. After Willman evened the score with a short-handed goal at 11:03, Corcoran notched his second of the game just over two minutes later to give the Bears a 4-3 lead.

Nevertheless, Eli Lichtenwald answered back at 15:10 to tie the game at 4-4, before Cole Maier tacked on the game winner 50 seconds later for the one-goal advantage. Maier added an empty netter with 21 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Brown outshot Union, 37-21.

The Bears return to action on Friday, Nov. 11 when they host Cornell at 7 PM. The game will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3.
