Men’s Hockey Falls at Rensselaer, 3-1

TROY, N.Y. – Rookie Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) scored late in the third period to trim the lead to one, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to Rensselaer, 3-1, in the ECAC opener Friday night at Houston Field House.

Rensselaer improved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the ECAC, while the Bears dropped to 0-3 on the season.

Beaudoin scored his first collegiate goal for the Bears with 1:23 remaining to trim Rensselaer's lead to 2-1, but the Engineers countered with an empty-netter to seal the win. Drew Melanson paced the Engineers with two goals, while Evan Tironese and Lou Nanne had two assists apiece.

Freshman Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 28 saves in the loss, including 13 in the second period. Chase Perry stopped 27 saves on the other end for the Engineers.

The two teams killed one penalty apiece in a scoreless opening period. Melanson had a breakaway for the Engineers midway through the stanza, but Nieto came up with a big stop to keep the game scoreless.

The Bears picked up the offensive pressure with seven minutes left in the first, ending with consecutive bids from Zack Pryzbek (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) and Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.), as the visitors outshot the Engineers, 12-9, in the first period.

Brown killed four penalties in the second period, but the Engineers took a one-goal lead at 14:17, when Melanson finished a breakaway with a shot over the shoulder of Nieto. Tironese set up the breakaway to earn the primary assist. Rensselaer outshot the Bears in the second stanza, 14-7.

Jared Wilson scored 19 seconds into the third period when he blasted a shot from the top of the left circle for the two-goal lead.

After Brown pulled Nieto during the final two minutes for the extra skater, Perry turned away a shot from Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), but Beaudoin was there for the rebound to make it a one-goal game. Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) was also credited with an assist.

Melanson added the empty-net goal at 19:26 for his second of the game to secure the win.

Brown will visit No. 20 Union tomorrow at 7 PM.
