Men’s Hockey Falls to No. 3 Union, 3-0, in Regular Season Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Third-ranked Union used a trio of third-period goals to break a scoreless tie as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Dutchmen, 3-0, on Senior Day and the regular season finale in Saturday afternoon's ECAC matchup at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown drops to 11-15-3 overall and 8-13-1 in the league, while ECAC regular season champion Union improves to 24-6-4 on the season and 18-3-1 in conference action. Ninth-seeded Brown will play at eighth-seeded St. Lawrence in the first round of the ECAC Playoffs on March 7-9 in a best-of-three series. Brown earned three points against the Saints during the regular season, including a 5-3 victory at Appleton Arena. Game times for the first round will be 7 p.m. starts.

Alex Sakellaropoulos made 26 saves to earn the shutout win in net for the Dutchmen, while senior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy) registered 30 stops on the other end for the Bears. Senior Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, British Columbia) led the Bears with six shots in the contest. Union outshot the Bears by a 33-26 margin.

The two teams were back and forth to open the first period, before Union went on the power play midway through the stanza, but the Brown penalty kill halted any chance of a Dutchmen scoring opportunity during the attack. Junior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) took advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone and carved through the Union defense for the shorthanded attempt, but Sakellaropoulos denied the bid at the last second.

Brown put together a late run near the end of the opening frame, as sophomore Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) and junior Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine's, Ontario) found space for shots on net, but Sakellaropoulos turned away both shots to preserve the even score at first intermission. Union held a 13-11 edge in shots during the first period.

The teams killed off one penalty apiece in the second period en route to a scoreless frame as the Dutchmen outshot the Bears, 12-9. Senior Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, Maine) had a wraparound attempt and junior Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) made a strong rush to the net, but neither found the back of the net to keep the game scoreless after the second period.

Union opened up the scoring at 12:51 in the third period when Kevin Sullivan skated through the left circle and setup Daniel Ciampini in front of the net for the go-ahead goal.

Union tacked on another goal at the 16:17 mark as Matt Wilkins took advantage of a turnover at the blue line, maneuvered around a sliding defender and then hit Daniel Carr for the one-timer to beat De Filippo and give the visitors the lead, 2-0.

Sullivan gave the Dutchmen a final empty-net goal at 19:52 to seal the victory.

Senior Robertson, Hathaway, De Filippo, Mark Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass.), Jake Goldberg (Langhorne, Pa.), Matt Wahl (Wellington, Fla.) and Michael Juola (Lake Forest, Calif.) were honored for their four years of dedication and commitment to the program.

Brown will open a best-of-three series at St. Lawrence on Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m.
