Men’s Hockey Ousted at Rensselaer, 4-1
TROY, N.Y. – Senior Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, British Columbia) recorded a power-play goal late in the first period to cut the lead to one, but it was not enough, as the Brown men's hockey team fell at Rensselaer, 4-1, in Saturday evening's ECAC matchup at Houston Field House.
Brown drops to 9-11-3 overall and 6-9-1 in the conference with the loss, while RPI improves to 12-12-4 on the season and 6-7-3 in the ECAC.
Robertson scored the lone goal for the Bears with his team-high fifth power-play goal of the season, while juniors Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) and Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) picked up assists on the play. Rookie Tyler Steel (Kelowna, British Columbia) made 25 saves in net for the Bears, while Scott Diebold registered 18 stops on the other end for the Engineers. Robertson led the Bears with four shots.
The Engineers set the tone with an early goal just 34 seconds into the contest when Mike Zalewski knocked in a rebound from the left circle to give the home side the advantage, 1-0.
Rensselaer tacked on another goal at 14:00 as Matt Tinordi fielded a pass at the top of the slot and skated into open space just in front of the net before sending a shot over the shoulder of Steel for the lead, 2-0.
With 3:34 left in the opening stanza, the Engineers were called for a pair of penalties as interference and too many men on the ice gave the Bears a 5-on-3 opportunity. Brown took advantage of the power play at 17:01, when Robertson rifled a shot from the right circle into the back of the net to pull the Bears within one, 2-1.
Brown outshot the Engineers by a 10-7 margin in the opening period.
With Brown on the power play five minutes into the second period, Mark McGowan caused a turnover in the defensive end and skated down the other end of the ice for the shorthanded breakaway, but Steel denied the shot to keep the Bears within a goal.
Following a Brown penalty, Tinordi notched his second goal of the game at 13:55, as a shot from the left circle bounced off the pad of Steel and fluttered into the back of the net to give the Engineers the 3-1 advantage at the second intermission.
With 11:24 left in the third, freshman Aleksi Rossi (Kuopio, Finland) blasted a shot that missed just wide, as the puck bounced back in front of the crease, but Diebold fell on it to prevent any damage. Five minutes later, Lorito set up Mark Naclerio in the slot for the one-timer, before Diebold turned away the attempt.
Rensselaer added a fourth and final goal at the 17:36 mark of the third period when McGowan tipped a shot from the left circle past Steel to seal the victory.
