Men’s Hockey Captures 4-2 Victory Over Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Sophomores Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) and Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) notched two points apiece and four different players found the back of the net as the Brown men's hockey team downed Colorado College, 4-2, in Saturday's non-conference contest at World Arena.

Brown improved to 6-6-2 on the season and 3-0-1 over the last four games, while the Tigers dropped to 2-13-3 overall.

In addition to Lappin and Naclerio, juniors Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) and Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, Mass.) also scored for the Bears, while 10 different players registered at least one point. Senior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy) stopped 31 shots in net for the Bears to earn the victory, while Josh Thorimbert made 13 saves on the other end for the loss, before giving way to Courtney Lockwood midway through the third period.

The start of the first period featured an early power-play opportunity for each team, but neither side could put together a quality scoring chance, as there was just one combined shot on-goal between the two sides in the opening seven minutes.

Brown jumped on the board midway through the first stanza when Lamacchia opened up the scoring with a power-play goal at 11:26 for his second tally of the season. Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, Colo.) slid a pass across the slot to the far post, where Lamacchia flipped a shot over the shoulder of Thorimbert for the early lead, 1-0. Matt Wahl (Wellington, Fla.) was also credited with an assist on the play.

Colorado College responded with a power-play goal at 15:04 as Sam Rothstein rifled a shot from the right circle to beat De Filippo and even up the score at 1-1. Colorado College outshot the Bears by an 18-5 margin in the opening frame.

Naclerio scored the go-ahead goal at 4:07 in the second period to push the Bears out in front, 2-1. Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) received a pass from Lappin in front of the blue line and sent the puck through traffic at the net, where Naclerio was all alone out in front and was able to sneak a shot behind Thorimbert for the one-goal lead.

Brown maintained its momentum with another tally at 7:43, when Naclerio skated into the left circle and sent a centering pass to Lappin, who blasted a shot into the back of the net for the 3-1 advantage. Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) also earned an assist on the play.

The Bears tacked on another goal at 5:09 in the third period when Harlow took a pass from Joey de Concilys (St. Catharine's, Ontario) and skated through the left circle before sending a shot at the net, but the puck deflected off Thorimbert's skate and over the line to push the visitors in front, 4-1.

The Tigers trimmed the deficit to two on a goal by Alex Krushelnyski with 1:36 left in the third period, but it was not enough to ignite a comeback, as the Bears cruised to the two-goal victory.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they play host to No. 6 Boston College at 5 p.m. For tickets, purchase online, call the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walk up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
