PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Kyle Kramer (Qualicum Beach, British Columbia) and senior Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, British Columbia) both scored first period goals as the Brown men's hockey team downed ECAC and Ivy rival Harvard, 2-1, in conference action Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown improved to 4-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC play, while the Crimson dropped to 4-7-1 on the season and 2-6-1 in conference action.
Freshman Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) made 17 saves in net for the Bears to earn the victory, while Raphael Girard recorded 30 stops on the other end.
Brown jumped out to an early lead when Kramer scored his first collegiate goal at 5:35. After sophomore Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, BC) took a shot from the point, Kramer was able to skate into the shooting lane and re-direct the puck past Raphael Girard for the one-goal advantage. Junior Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine's BC) was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Bears kept up the attack with another tally as Robertson found the back of the net on a power play with 2:23 left in the period. After junior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) blasted a shot from in front of the blue line into the chest of Girard, sophomore Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) corralled the rebound and pushed the puck across the slot to Robertson, who hit the one-timer to pad the lead, 2-0.
Brown held an 11-6 advantage in shots during the opening stanza.
The Bears carried over their momentum into the second period and controlled the puck throughout most of the stanza, outshooting the Crimson by an 11-4 margin. Brown's best opportunity came at 11:02 when sophomore Joe Prescott (Norwell, Mass.) rifled a shot from the far post that was deflected by Girard, before the puck rattled off the post and fell into the crease, but Harvard was able to clear the play to prevent any damage.
Harvard made it on the board early in the third period when Jimmy Vesey scored just 1:19 into the stanza. Brian Hart managed to chase down the puck in the offensive end and gained possession along the boards, barely sending a pass into the slot, where Vesey beat Steel to trim the deficit to one, 2-1.
The Brown defense stepped up the rest of the way, highlighted by a penalty kill midway through the stanza, when the Bears allowed just one shot on target. The Bears also blocked a trio of shots in the waning minutes to preserve the victory.
Brown outshot the Crimson, 32-18, and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Lorito and Robertson led the Bears with four shots apiece in the contest.
