HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Joe Prescott (Norwell, Mass.) scored late in the opening period to even the score, but the Raiders responded one minute later and hung on the rest of the way as the Brown men's hockey team fell at Colgate, 3-1, Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
Brown drops to 3-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in ECAC action, while Colgate improves to 7-7-1 on the season and 5-3-0 in the league.
Senior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy) registered 26 saves in net for the Bears, while Charlie Finn made 38 stops on the other end for the Raiders.
After escaping some early trouble by killing off a trio of penalties in the first seven minutes, the Bears went on the power play, but Colgate scored a shorthanded goal at 3:29 to take the lead. Mike Borkowski gained possession of the puck in the neutral zone and slipped a pass to Kyle Baun, who beat De Filippo to give the Raiders the lead, 1-0.
Nevertheless, Colgate committed another penalty less than a minute later, and the Bears took advantage as Prescott scored with eight seconds left in the power play to even the score. Senior Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, Maine) gained control and immediately found junior Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, Mass.), who cruised down to the left circle and found Prescott in front of the net for the tally.
The Raiders answered back exactly one minute later when Mark Borkowski rifled a shot from the left circle just under the bar to give the home side the advantage, 2-1, at the end of the first period. Colgate held an 11-8 edge in shots during the opening stanza.
In the second period, the teams battled back and forth offensively, before a pair of Brown penalties gave the Raiders a pivotal 5-on-3 opportunity. However, the Bears came up with a big penalty kill, highlighted by a number of stops by De Filippo. The senior goalie turned away a near-goal as the puck bounced in the crease, but he was able to swat it away to clear the play.
Brown's best chance in the period came seconds after the Bears killed the 5-on-3, when Hathaway hit Lorito down the middle, but his shot was denied by Finn as the Raiders held a one-goal lead at second intermission. Brown outshot the Raiders, 13-10, in the second period.
Brown came on strong late in the third period and started to put more shots in net, including a pair of solid bids from junior Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) and sophomore Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia), but Finn kept the Bears at bay down the stretch.
Colgate managed to kill off a late penalty and added an empty-net goal by Darcy Murphy to seal the victory.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 when they visit Providence in the 28th Annual Mayor's Cup at 7 p.m.
