PROVIDENCE, RI – Following Brown's sweep of Clarkson in its ECAC Hockey First Round series over the weekend, senior goalie Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY) has been named ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week and freshman center Mark Naclerio (Milford, CT) has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. For Borelli, it is his first career weekly award, while for Naclerio, it marks the second time this season that he has been named Rookie of the Week. The duo were instrumental in helping Brown advance to this weekend's Quarterfinal series at RPI, marking the first time since 2010 that the Bears have moved on past the First Round.
Borelli stopped 65 of 68 shots over the weekend, including all 31 he faced in a 3-0 shutout in game one Friday night, his third shutout of the season. In game two, he recorded 34 saves on 37 shots, including 15 in the third period, during which Clarkson held a 17-3 advantage in shots. Two of the three goals he allowed in the second game were scored on the power play, including one five-on-three. In both nights, Borelli's steady play was instrumental in helping Brown hold on for the win. Clarkson had a late power play in Friday night's game, before pulling Greg Lewis for the extra attacker and a six-on-four advantage with just over two minutes left in regulation. The next night, the Golden Knights made it a 4-3 game with a five-on-three power play goal at 16:41 of the third. Borelli made several big saves on the ensuing 1:37 of power play time that remained and then a few more after Clarkson pulled its goalie, essentially playing the final four minutes of the game with a player advantage.
Naclerio had another big weekend for the Bears, earning three points (1g, 2a), including the game-winning goal in Brown's 3-0 win in game one. He also earned the primary assist on Matt Lorito's goal that gave the Bears a 2-0 lead midway through the second period. The next night, Naclerio had an assist on another Lorito goal, which gave the Bears a 1-0 lead just 8:16 into the game. He finished the weekend with a +1 rating and also led Brown in the faceoff circle, winning 15 of 28 on Friday night and 18 of 25 Saturday. Included in his Saturday total were five critical faceoff wins in the final four minutes of regulation when Clarkson was pressing for the equalizer with a pair of late power play chances and then an extra attacker.
Borelli, Naclerio and the rest of the Brown men's hockey team travel to RPI this weekend to face the Engineers in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals. The best-of-three series begins on Friday, March 15th, at 7:00 p.m. with game two slated for Saturday, March 16th, at 7:00 p.m., and game three, if necessary, scheduled for Sunday, March 17th, also at 7:00 p.m.
