The Bears went 1-1 at last year's Showcase, loosing to Dartmouth, 2-1, in the Friday night game but triumphing over Princeton, 3-2, on Saturday night. Head Coach Brendan Whittet '94 will begin his fourth season behind the Brown bench, as the Bears look to climb the ranks of the ECAC and improve their twelfth place finish from last year. He is joined by Associate Head Coach Mike White, also in his fourth season, and second year Assistant Coach Mark Souza, as they work to harness the talent of a young, rapidly improving team.
The Bears return seven of their top 10 leading scorers from the 2011-2012 campaign, led by sophomore forward Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO), who registered 21 points (12g, 9a) in his rookie season. Classmate Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) contributed 17 points (4g, 13a) to the offense, while senior assistant captain Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) and sophomore Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) round out the top returning forwards. Brown will rely heavily on its youth this season, looking for significant contributions from junior assistant captain Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME) and sophomore Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, MA), as well as first-year players Nick Lappin (Geneva, IL), Mark Naclerio (Milford, CT) and Joe Prescott (Norwell, MA).
On the blue line, junior captain Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, British Columbia) led Brown's defensemen in scoring last year for the second season in a row, tallying 16 points on two goals and 14 assists. He will be joined by linemate Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) and senior assistant captain Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) in the quest to give Brown a defensive edge, while also creating opportunities on the offensive side. Freshmen Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) and Nate Widman (Naperville, IL) will look to make an immediate impact, as they will provide a very physical presence around the Bears' net.
While filling the shoes of goaltender Mike Clemente '12 will be tough, senior Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY) and junior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy) are ready for the challenge. De Filippo started seven games last season, making 198 saves for a GAA of 3.36 and a save percentage of .908.
Fans attending Friday night's game are invited to visit the Bears' Fan Zone on Ittleson Quad from 4-6pm. Located directly outside the front entrance to the rink, the event will feature inflatables and lawn games.
Brown will take to the road next weekend for their first ECAC contests of the season. The Bears will take on the Harvard Crimson at 7:00pm on Friday at Bright Hockey Center in Cambridge, MA, and then will travel north to Thompson Arena in Hanover, NH to face the Dartmouth Big Green at 7:00pm on Saturday.
