PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown men's hockey team (4-6-1, 3-3-0) scored two times in the final three minutes of play to break a 4-4 tie and earn a 6-4 win over 14th-ranked Yale (6-4-1, 4-2-0) on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium. Brown lead by two goals on three occasions during the game with the last one holding, as Yale twice battled back from two-goal deficits to tie the game at 2-2 and again at 4-4. Senior Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) led Brown with two goals, while freshman Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO) had a goal and two assists.
With the two teams tied at 4-4 and under three minutes to play, Jacobson's wrap-around attempt hit a player at the edge of the crease and the puck squirted out to senior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) at the left faceoff circle. Maclellan skated towards the net and banked his shot off the near post and into the goal to give Brown a 5-4 lead with 2:13 left to play.
The Bulldogs looked to pull goalie Jeff Malcolm in the final minutes of play, but Brown's aggressive forecheck prevented them from doing so until just 35 seconds remained in the game. After a Yale timeout, Maclellan won a critical defensive zone faceoff, allowing Brown to clear the zone for an empty net goal by Farnham with seven seconds left, icing the win.
Playing in front of a large contingent of hockey alumni, who were back on College Hill for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Meehan Auditorium, the Bears came out flying, outshooting Yale, 19-9, during the first period of play and grabbing a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in a span of 80 seconds.
Both teams had chances early in the game, but Brown started to take control midway through the period, taking a 1-0 lead on the first career goal for freshman Joey de Concilys (St. Catharine's, ONT) 17:10 into the first. Junior Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) sent the puck up the right side to Jacobson, who carried it past the right faceoff circle, before passing to de Concilys, who was trailing the play. From the far side, de Concilys collected the pass from Jacobson at the left faceoff circle and one-timed the puck past Jeff Malcolm. His goal was the third first career goal scored by a member of the Brown Class of 2015 in this series, joining classmates Kyle Quick (Buffalo, NY) and Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, MA), who scored their first career goals on Thursday night.
Just 40 seconds after the goal, Brown would take the game's first penalty, but Farnham scored an unassisted short-handed goal to give Brown a 2-0 lead at 18:30.
The Bulldogs got one back just 1:16 into the second period, as Josh Balch converted a two-on-one break with Clinton Bourbonais, beating senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) through the five-hole. Yale tied the game at 6:36, converting on its second power play chance of the game. Antoine Laganiere's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle deflected off a Brown skate and bounced inside the near post.
However, less than a minute later, at 7:32, Brown regained the one-goal lead when Jacobson took a pass from freshman Matt Lorito (Oakville, ONT) and fired it past Malcolm from the bottom of the left circle. For Lorito, it was his first career point, while sophomore Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) also earned an assist on the goal.
The Bears added one more before the end of the period, as Wahl scored his second of the year at 15:46. Farnham left the puck for Wahl at the right side and he blasted a slap shot through traffic that found the back of the net. Junior Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) also earned an assist on the goal.
The Bulldogs would not go away quietly, scoring twice in the first 3:25 of the third period to tie the score at 4-4. Chad Ziegler converted on the power play at 2:32 to bring Yale to within 4-3 and less than a minute later, at 3:25, Laganiere scored his second of the game to knot the score at 4-4.
Laganiere's tying goal set up the dramatic finish to the game in the final minutes, as the Ivy travel partners split the regular season series for the second year in a row. For the game, Brown outshot Yale, 43-31, as Malcolm finished with 37 saves and Clemente made 27 for Brown. Maclellan was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 26 of 34 draws.
During the 2nd intermission, Brown also recognized the 11 members of the 1961-62 hockey team, the first squad to play at Meehan, who were part of a group of close to 100 alumni in attendance at the game. They included James Deveney '64, Joseph Dougherty '64, John Dunham '64, David Gallogly '64, Robert "Gill" Goering '63, Bruce McIntyre '63, Greg McLaughlin '63, Robert Olsen '64, Al Vandam '64, and 1961-62 co-captains Colby Cameron '63 and Brian Smith '63.
Brown is now off for nearly four weeks for the exam break and the holidays. The Bears return to action New Year's weekend with a pair of non-league games, their last two non-league contests of the year, against teams from Hockey East. Brown faces New Hampshire on December 30th in Durham and Providence College on January 1st at PC.
