PROVIDENCE, RI – Senior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) scored a pair of goals to give Brown a 2-0 lead and senior David Brownschidle (Lawrenceville, NJ) struck for the game-winner just 30 seconds into overtime to lift the Bears (9-14-5, 7-12-2) to a 3-2 win over Cornell (13-12-3, 11-8-2) on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
The win gives Brown its first season sweep over the Big Red since the 1994-95 season and allows Brown to stay alive for home ice in the 2011 playoffs. The Bears can finish from seventh through ninth in the league standings and need a win tomorrow over Colgate to have a shot at home ice, which will be secured with either a Clarkson loss or a Quinnipiac loss or tie combined with a Bears' win.
Brownschidle's game-winner came just 30 seconds into overtime and erased Cornell's come-back attempt, as the Big Red cashed in on a pair of power play goals 2:11 apart in the third to force the extra period.
Junior Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) started the play when he took the puck in the left corner and passed up to freshman Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) at the left point. Robertson fired a shot towards the cage and junior Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) tried to redirect it, but got tied up by a Cornell defenseman. Brownschidle skated towards the lose puck and fired a quick shot that beat Andy Iles glove-side for his seventh of the season.
The two teams played a relatively even first period, with Brown holding a slight, 12-9, advantage in shots and earning two power play chances during the final half of the period.
With Mathieu Brisson in the box for hooking at the 10:05 mark, Brown needed just 40 seconds to take a 1-0 lead when Zolnierczyk scored his 13th goal of the season on a broken play. Sophomore Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) started the play when he sent the puck up the boards to freshman Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) at the left point. Robertson looked to pass down into the slot, but the puck bounced off a Cornell player and right to Zolnierczyk. With his back to the net, Zolnierczyk back-handed the puck over Andy Iles' shoulder, giving Brown a 1-0 lead at the 10:45 mark.
Zolnierczyk doubled the Bears' lead at 8:18 of the second period, scoring a highlight reel worthy goal. After collecting the puck from Brownschidle in the neutral zone, Zolnierczyk broke in behind the Cornell defense on the left wing. He angled towards the net with a burst of speed and leapt into the air, over a Cornell defenseman, while maintaining possession and sliding the puck towards the net. Iles initially made the stop, but the puck deflected in off his left skate and over the goal line. Sophomore Jeff Ryan (Media, PA) also earned an assist on the goal for his first point of the season. Ryan made a heads-up play in Brown's defensive zone, catching the puck in the air, and playing it up to Brownschidle to avoid getting called for a hand pass.
The Big Red capitalized on back-to-back Brown penalties just 23 seconds apart, the second of which was a five-minute major for hitting from behind on Zolnierczyk. With just 8 seconds left in the two-man advantage, Tyler Roeszler redirected a centering feed from Greg Miller at the top of the crease to get Cornell on the board at 11:54. Then just 2:11 later, Sean Collins put away a rebound of a shot by Lock Jillson to tie the game at 2-2 at the 14:05 mark, sending the game to overtime.
Both junior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) and Iles stopped 31 shots in their respective nets. Brown continues action tomorrow night when it hosts Colgate in the 2011 regular season finale.
