PROVIDENCE, RI – Trailing, 2-0, after the first period, #13 Union (8-2-3, 3-1-1) battled back from the early deficit to earn a 4-3 win over the Brown men's hockey team (3-3-3, 2-2-1) on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium. Junior leading scorer Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) led the Bears with a pair of goals for the first multi-goal game of his career, while freshman Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) also scored in the loss.
The two teams battled back-and-forth during the early going with both junior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) and Union's Keith Kinkaid making several quality saves to keep the game scoreless through the first eight minutes.
The Dutchmen would go up on the first man-advantage of the game after a tripping call on junior Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) at the 8:08 mark. However, Maclellan would score a short-handed goal just 12 seconds in to give Brown an early lead.
After intercepting a Union pass at the blueline, Maclellan skated the puck into the zone on a two-on-one break, before beating Kinkaid with a low slap shot from the top of the right circle.
Despite getting outshot, 12-8, for the period, Brown would extend its lead to 2-0 before the first intermission on Wahl's second goal of the season. Freshman Mark Hourihan (Lynnfield, MA) sent the puck around the boards and behind the net to senior David Brownschidle (Lawrenceville, NJ). Brownschidle went for a wrap-around attempt, coming around from the left side of the net and the rebound went right to Wahl at the opposite side. Wahl one-timed a shot from the bottom of the right circle over Kinkaid's stick, giving Brown a 2-0 lead at 15:26.
The Dutchmen would get on the board just 4:26 into the second period when Wayne Simpson carried the puck into the zone and got a shot off around the Brown defender, beating Clemente high for his fifth of the year.
Just 1:24 later, Maclellan was taken down by Brock Matheson on a partial breakaway, but the Bears were unable to convert on the man-advantage. The power play would prove to be Brown's best chance of the frame, as freshman Jimmy Siers (Mt. Prospect, IL) was whistled for a five-minute major and a game misconduct at 8:54, giving the Dutchmen a five-minute power play.
The Bears killed the major, which saw Clemente come up with several big saves in the waning minutes, but the penalty kill drained the Bears and they were unable to pressure Union in the final six minutes of the period.
Taking advantage of the fatigued Bears, Union tied the score with 1:47 left in the period when Jeremy Welch collected the puck high in the slot and beat Clemente with a low shot to the right post.
The Dutchmen scored their third straight goal to take their first lead of the night, 3-2, just 4:23 into the final period. Daniel Carr collected the puck from Jeremy Welsh at the top of the right faceoff circle and wristed a high shot over Clemente's glove.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Maclellan scored his second of the night at 6:58 and with Brown on its fourth power play chance of the evening. After a shot by freshman Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) went wide left, sophomore Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) picked up the rebound at took a quick shot that Kinkaid saved. However the rebound went right to Maclellan in the slot and he lifted the puck over Kinkaid's leg for his second goal of the night and third in two games.
Union would go ahead, 4-3, with 4:41 left in regulation when Shawn Stuart collected the puck from Josh Jooris and wristed a shot from the left point over Clemente's glove for his first of the year.
Brown pulled Clemente in favor of the extra attacker with 1:23 remaining, but to no avail, as Union held on for the 4-3 win, snapping Brown's unbeaten streak at four games.
Clemente finished with 28 saves, while Kinkaid made 15 saves for the Dutchmen. The Bears continue their three game home-stand tomorrow afternoon when they host 15th-ranked RPI in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
