PROVIDENCE, RI – Brown men's hockey head coach Brendan Whittet has announced the Bears 2010-11 schedule, which features a challenging non-league portion in addition to the 22 games against ECAC Hockey opponents. The home portion of the schedule also features several family friendly 4:00 p.m. start times on select Saturdays.
"The schedule for 2010-11 is a challenging one, yet a challenge that we fully embrace as a hockey program," said Whittet. "We aspire to be an elite NCAA program, and to get there we must play the very best teams in the country. The non-conference games at New Hampshire, Boston University, and at the Notre Dame Tournament will definitely provide a litmus test as to where we are as a program. Also included are three games against our travel partner Yale, which could likely be selected as the ECAC's preseason favorite, and our annual Mayor's Cup game against cross-town rival Providence College."
The Bears will open play in 2010-11 the weekend of October 29-30th, traveling to New Haven, CT for the fourth annual Ivy Showcase. New this season is the addition of Dartmouth, as all teams involved – Yale and Princeton in addition to Brown and Dartmouth – will play two non-league games against their Ivy opponents. Brown will play at Yale on Friday night at 7:00 and then face either Dartmouth or Princeton at 4:00 on Saturday.
Brown jumps right into ECAC Hockey action the following weekend with a home series against Quinnipiac and Princeton. After a rare weekend off, the Bears travel to central New York for games at Colgate and Cornell on November 19th and 20th. Brown then takes a brief break from League action with a pair of road games against Hockey East opponents on Tuesday, November 23rd (at New Hampshire) and Saturday, November 27th (at Boston University).
The Bears close out the first semester with three straight home games in five days, against Union (December 3rd), RPI (December 4th – 4:00 start time), and Providence College (December 7th).
Following the break for exams and the holidays, Brown resumes action on January 1st-2nd at Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament, to be played in Hoffman Estates, IL. The Bears open against the Irish and will face either Boston University or Minnesota State in day two of the tournament, wrapping up the non-league portion of Brown's schedule.
Upon returning to Providence, Brown travels to Harvard and Dartmouth and will then face its travel-partner Yale in a home-and-home weekend (January 15th-16th) with both games scheduled to begin at 4:00.
The final 12 games on the schedule are split evenly between home and away contests, as the Bears close out the League portion of their schedule. Home weekends are January 21-22 (St. Lawrence & Clarkson) and February 25-26 (Cornell & Colgate). The home weekend against Harvard and Dartmouth has been split due to Harvard's involvement in the Bean Pot. Brown will host the Crimson on Wednesday February 2nd and then host Dartmouth on Friday February 4th.
