Seniors Lead Brown to 3-0 Win in Third Place Game of 2010 ECAC Championship

ALBANY, NY – Senior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) stopped all 21 shots he faced and senior Aaron Volpatti’s (Revelstoke, BC) 17th goal of the year would stand as the game-winner, as the Brown men’s hockey team (13-20-4, 6-12-4) closed out its 2010 season with a 3-0 victory over St. Lawrence (19-16-7, 14-5-3) in the consolation game of the 2010 ECAC Championship Saturday afternoon at the Times Union Center. The win gives Brown its 13th of the season, the most wins in a season since the 2005 season when the Bears won 16 games.

The two teams played through a scoreless opening period with both Brown and St. Lawrence earning several opportunities, but both Rosen and Alex Petizian made the saves they needed to keep the game scoreless.

The second period was more of the same, with the two teams trading opportunities early on. Towards the latter half of the period, however, Brown started to pick up its intensity, earning several long shifts in the Saints’ zone. With the score still knotted at zero, Volpatti broke the tie with his 17th goal of the year at the 14:34 mark of the second.

Rosen made a save on a Jacob Drewiske shot from the left side and then pushed the rebound to freshman Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ), who chipped the puck off the glass on the right wing. A Saints’ defenseman attempted to grab the puck out of the air to keep it in the zone, but it deflected off his glove and fell behind him. Volpatti raced to pick up the lose puck, skated in on a breakaway, and beat Petizian stick-side high, banking his shot off the upper left corner and in.

Junior Jesse Fratkin (Burnaby, BC) increased Brown’s lead to 2-0 at 4:05 of the second, knocking in a feed from classmate Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT). Zolnierczyk collected the puck from senior Scott Van der Linden (Antigonish, NS) in neutral ice and skated along the right wing all the way into the corner. Fratkin followed the play into the zone and one-timed Zolnierczyk’s centering feed past Petizian from the top of the crease.

With both teams skating four players in the 17th minute of the third period, St. Lawrence pulled Petizian in favor of the extra attacker. Senior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) blocked a Saints shot and flipped the puck up to senior Jordan Pietrus (Winnipeg, MAN), who had a two-on-one with Zolnierczyk on his right.

Pietrus skated the puck into the zone and cross the puck over to Zolnierczyk, who one-timed the puck into the open net with 3:08 remaining for his 13th goal of the year.

Rosen finished with 21 saves to earn his second career shutout, while Petizian made 34 saves for the Saints.
