Brown's 3-0 First Period Lead Holds as Men's Hockey Defeats Clarkson, 3-2
POTSDAM, NY - Three different players scored in the opening 16 minutes of play to give the Brown men's hockey team (6-12-1, 4-7-1) a 3-0 lead, which would be enough in a 3-2 victory over Clarkson (5-16-3, 1-9-2) on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena. The victory, which snaps a five-game skid, gives the Bears two valuable league points and marks the first win over Clarkson for Brown's seniors.
The Bears wasted little time in grabbing a lead against the Golden Knights, when junior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) scored just 26 seconds after the opening faceoff. Senior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) started the play, backhanding the puck out of Brown's zone with a Clarkson player on his heels. The puck sailed through the neutral zone to the far blueline where sophomore Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) battled an opposing player for possession. The puck squirted right to Zolnierczyk, who broke in with Farnham on a partial odd-man rush. Zolnierczyk looked to feed to Farnham on his left and the puck deflected past Paul Karpowich for his ninth goal of the year and fifth in the past four games.
Brown doubled its lead at 11:24 when sophomore Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) scored his fourth goal of the season, following a long-range shot by senior Jordan Pietrus (Winnipeg, MAN) that caught Karpowich off guard. After receiving the puck from freshman Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) in neutral zone, Pietrus turned and fired a quick shot from outside the zone that Karpowich saved. However, before he could corral the rebound, Smith raced in, crashing the net and pushing the puck over the goal line.
McMonagle increased the Bears lead to 3-0 at 16:03, scoring his second goal of the weekend 50 seconds after Brown finished killing Clarkson's first power play chance of the night. With an offensive zone faceoff to Karpowich's left, senior Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) won the draw back to sophomore Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) at the right point. Buvinow crossed the puck over to McMonagle on the left side and he floated a shot over Karpowich's right shoulder for the three-goal lead.
Following the goal, Richie LaVeau replaced Karpowich in the Clarkson net and the Bears were stymied by the sophomore goalie, while the Golden Knights crept back into the game with a goal in each of the remaining periods.
Clarkson got one back just over a minute into the second period when Brandon DeFazio hopped on a lose puck in the slot and got it behind sophomore Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) for his seventh goal of the season at 1:05.
The Golden Knights capitalized on a Bears' defensive zone turnover at 6:56 of the third period to close their deficit to one goal. After Brown failed to clear the zone, Nik Pokulok fired a shot from the left point that Clemente saved. However, the rebound bounced out to the other side of the crease, where Matt Beca was able to tuck the puck inside the near post for his 13th of the year.
Clarkson pulled LaVeau with 36 seconds remaining in favor of the extra attacker and then the Bears were whistled for a penalty 12 seconds later, giving the Golden Knights a six-on-four advantage. Clarkson won the ensuing faceoff, but Brown held on for the victory, while snapping a five-game skid.
Clemente finished with 25 saves, while Karpowich and LaVeau combined to make 28 saves for Clarkson.
After playing six straight games on the road, the Bears return home next weekend to host RPI and Union in a pair of ECAC Hockey contests. Brown will remain at home the following weekend to host Harvard and Dartmouth.
