Bears Fall to RPI, 3-1

TROY, NY - Rensselaer (6-3-1, 2-0-0) took advantage of two power plays and added a late goal to earn a 3-1 victory over the Brown men's hockey team (0-2-1, 0-1-1) on Saturday evening at Houston Field House. Senior Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) scored the lone goal for the Bears, netting Brown's first power play goal of the season.

One day after tying Union, the Bears came out against the Engineers with energy, taking the first two shots of the game. However, Brown's early momentum was halted when it was assessed four straight penalties in a span of 2:12, from 13:51 to 16:03. The infractions eventually led to a long two-man advantage for the Engineers, which Brandon Pirri cashed in on for a 1-0 lead.

After junior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) was called for a double minor at 13:51, junior Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) went to the box 35 seconds later for boarding, setting up a full two-minute five-on-three chance for RPI. Brown was 23 seconds away form killing that, when a slashing call on junior Sean Connauton (Edmonton, ALB) gave RPI two-man advantage for 2:23.

Sophomore Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) was outstanding during the penalty-kill, making eight of his 13 first-period saves during the RPI advantage. However, with seven seconds left on the two-man advantage, Pirri collected the puck in the slot and beat Clemente with a low wrist shot.

The Engineers increased their lead to 2-0 at 3:39 of the second, when Paul Kerins put away the rebound of a shot by Jerry D'Amigo on another RPI power play. Kerins' goal was essentially a five-on-three, as it was scored just four seconds after Brown returned one player to the ice.

The Bears had a two-man advantage of their own for just over a minute at the 4:58 mark, and Timberlake made it a one-goal game with his first goal of the season, which was also Brown's first power play goal of the year.

Brown displayed solid puck movement for the duration of the five-on-three and scored with just one second left, at 5:59. Sophomore Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) passed the puck over to sophomore Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) on his left. Maclellan unleashed a shot that was blocked by RPI, but the rebound came out to Timberlake on the left post. Before RPI could get over to Timberlake, he lifted the puck up and behind Allen York, hitting the top corner.

The score remained 2-1, in favor of RPI until the 18:06 mark when Chase Polacek converted a three-on-one rush for the Engineers. Less than a minute prior to the goal, Brown had two great chances to tie the game. Russell had the first, on a one-timer from the bottom of the right faceoff circle, but York was able to get over from the other side of the net in time to make the save. Seconds later, sophomore Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) hit the post.

Brown pulled Clemente in favor of the extra attacker with 1:45 remaining, but to no avail, as RPI held on for the win.

Clemente finished with 25 saves, while York stopped 18 shots for the Engineers. After opening the season with three straight road games, Brown returns to action next weekend when it hosts Colgate and Cornell in its home opening weekend.
