Santa Cruz, California - Competing in one of the top intercollegiate tournaments in the nation, the Brown men's golf team stands in 17th place after the first round of play at the 63rd Annual Western Intercollegiate, held at the par 70, 6,511-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Bears shot an opening round 314 in the 18-team field. Fresno State leads the tournament by five shots at two-under 278.

The 54-hole tournament hosted by San Jose State University, will conclude with rounds on Monday and Tuesday, March 30 and 31.

Junior John Giannuzzi shot a solid six-over par 76 in the opening round, after birdying 17 and paring 18, to stand in 50th place individually. Sophomore Michael Amato shot an eight-over 78 for the Bears, placing 69th individually.

Senior co-captains Chris Hoffman and Conor Malloy each shot 80, with Hoffman going two under par on his final six holes. Senior Joe Rued chipped in with 84 for the Bears.
