Arroyo Grande, California - Brown turned in a solid performance in its first outing of the 2009 season, finishing 11th at the Cal Poly Men's Intercollegiate, held at the 6,818-yard par-72 Cyprus Ridge Golf Course. The Bears shot rounds of 311-311-312--934 to place 11th in the 12 team field. Junior John Giannuzzi's three-round 230 led the Bears.
British Columbia University captured the team title by 10 shots with a sizzling three-round 873, finishing ahead of host Cal Poly (883), Sacramento State (888), DePaul (894), CSU-Stanislaus (896), Utah Valley (901), Utah State (904), CSU-Monterery Bay (916), Academy of Art (917), CSU Bakersfield (918), Brown and CSU-San Marcos (973).
Gianuzzi's solid performance came on rounds of 76,75,79 to place 33rd overall, Senior co-captain Conor Malloy shot 75 on the final day of play to place 35th individually with a three-round 231.
Senior Joe Rued came through with a three-round 237 on rounds of 81, 76, 80 to finish 48th. Senior co-captain Chris Hoffman shot 78 on the final day to come in at 238 for the tournament, while sophomore Michael Amato carded an 80 on the final day for a three-round 238.
Coach Michael Hughes' team will stay on the West Coast before returning home to compete in the 63rd Annual Western Intercollegiate men's college golf tournament starting on Sunday, March 29. The 54-hole tournament hosted by San Jose State University takes place at the picturesque Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, California. Players will play 18 holes each day starting at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) through Tuesday, March 31, on the par 70, 6,511-yard Alister MacKenzie designed course.
