Following a national search, Mike Hughes, who has been the
Bears' interim golf coach since March 2008, has the been named the
head men's golf coach at Brown in an announcement made by Brown
athletic director Michael Goldberger. Hughes was an assistant men's
golf coach at Brown for a year, and stepped up to the interim
position last March when Mike Harbour stepped down. Hughes provided
the Bears with continuity, stability and a wealth of golf
knowledge, displaying all of the attributes of a success head
coach. A tireless worker, Hughes took over all of the recruiting
duties for the Brown team and considerably upgraded the Bears'
schedule in the spring. He has already made plans for the Brown
team to strengthen its schedule in the upcoming season. Hughes
brings a myriad of teaching and coaching experience to Brown. He
has worked as an assistant professional at Metacomet Country Club
and Agawam Hunt in East Providence, and as a Teaching Professional
at Longboat Key Club and PGA National; both in Florida. As Director
of Instruction at the Ken Venturi Golf Training Center in Chicago,
Hughes was an Assistant Men's Golf Coach at DePaul University. Mike
is currently the Director of Golf Operations at Mulligan's Island
in Cranston, practice home of the Brown Men's and Women's Golf
Team. He will continue to teach professionally. Hughes is a
graduate of St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, where
he was a four-year letterwinner in golf. A Rhode Island native,
Hughes grew up close to Brown's campus in East Providence.
