Mike Hughes will begin his 3rd year as Head Coach of the Brown
Bears. Working as assistant for former coach Mike Harbour, Mike was
handed the reins of the Bears' golf program in 2007.
The first order of business was upgrading Brown’s schedule
which has now seen the Bears competing at the Western
Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo in northern California, The Adams Cup
in Newport, RI, the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana University
and a day match with Arizona State in Tempe, AZ. In the past 3
years, Mike’s squad has competed against no less than 16
teams ranked in the GolfStat top 25 including the 2009 National
Champions, Texas A&M.
Mike brings a myriad of teaching and coaching experience to College
Hill with stints at Metacomet CC. and Agawam Hunt Club in East
Providence as an assistant professional, a teaching professional at
Longboat Key Club and PGA National, both in Florida and as the
Director of Golf for the Ken Venturi Golf Training Center in
Chicago where he also served as DePaul University’s assistant
coach.
Using his PGA contacts, Mike has been able to bring the Bear golf
squad to some of the best courses in America with rounds at the
previously mentioned Pasatiempo, Spyglass Hill, Monterey Peninsula
CC, the Bayonet Club, Caves Valley, Newport CC, Sebonack CC,
Sakonnet CC and the upcoming Ivy League Championship at Baltusrol
CC where Brown was instrumental in securing this most prestigious
venue.
Currently, Mike is Director of Golf Operations at Mulligan’s
Island Golf and Recreation in Cranston, RI; home of the Bear
men’s and women’s practice facility.
Mike is a graduate of St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH where he
was a 4 year letter winner in golf. He grew up less than 2 miles
from Brown’s campus in East Providence and presently resides
in Wickford, RI.
