Nov. 8, 2004
Providence, RI - Brown football players captured two of the four Ivy League individual honors this week following the Bears' 24-17 win over Yale on Saturday. Sophomore linebacker Zak DeOssie (Andover, MA) earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors, and freshman kicker/punter Steve Morgan (New Albany, OH) captured Ivy Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season.
DeOssie made big tackles and big plays from start to finish in the win over the Bulldogs. He deflected Yale's first pass of the game that was picked off, leading to a Brown touchdown. He intercepted a pass at the goal line, making an acrobatic catch to deny a potential Yale score. DeOssie registered 13 total tackles for the day (five solo, eight assists) and was in on a tackle for a loss. He is Brown's defensive leader for the season with 77 total tackles (40 solo, 37 assists).
Morgan connected on his 11th field goal of the season, booting a 21-yard field goal to tie the game 17-17 in the third quarter. He also punted nine times for the Bears, averaging 38.6 yards per punt, including a long punt of 51 yards. Morgan also made a touchdown saving tackle following a Brown kickoff. He has now connected on 11 of 15 field goals for the season, converting more field goals this year than the previous three seasons combined.
The Bears, 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Ivy League, will travel to Hanover, New Hampshire to face the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday, November 13th. Game time is 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Field.
