Providence, RI - Brown junior wide receiver Buddy Farnham (Andover, Mass.) and junior safety Chris Perkins (Bridgeton, MO) have been named the Ivy League's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their roles in Brown's 24-22 Ivy league victory over Harvard on Saturday.
Farnham was named the Ivy Offensive Player of the Week after coming up with several big plays including two touchdown receptions and an onsides kick recovery. With the Bears trailing 13-0, Farnham made a spectacular 25-yard touchdown reception when he reached over the Harvard defender while being interfered with (a flag was thrown), and wrestled the ball away with one hand for the TD reception. In the third quarter, Farnham extended Brown's lead to 21-13 with a 23-yard touchdown grab. After Harvard drew to within two points, 24-22, with 1:03 remaining in the game, Farnham recovered the Crimson onsides kick, cradling the ball as he fell to the ground. For the day, the double-teamed Farnham caught four passes for 78 yards, returned three kickoffs 34 yards, and returned three punts 20 yards, including a long punt return of 17 yards.
Perkins, the Ivy Defensive Player of the Week, led a Brown defensive effort that led to the Bears first win over Harvard after eight straight losses. Perkins made a team high nine tackles, including six solo stops, forced two key fumbles, including one that led to a Brown touchdown, broke-up two passes, and was in on a tackle for a loss.
Farnham, perkins and the rest of the Brown team travels to Kingston, Rhode Island for the 92nd battle with Rhode Island for the Governor's Cup on Saturday, October 4, 2008, kicking-off at 1:00 p.m. Brown alum and Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri '69 will be on hand to present the Governor's Cup to the winning team at the end of the game.
