DeOssie, DiGiacomo and Markey Named Brown Football Captains

May 12, 2006

Providence, Rhode Island - Brown University football coach Phil Estes announced that seniors Zak DeOssie, Joseph DiGiacomo and Brandon Markey have been elected tri-captains of the 2006 Brown Football team.

Coming off an Ivy League Championship season, Estes believes the trio has what it takes to help the Bears vie for their second straight Ivy title. "Our three captains have the extraordinary ability to positively motivate their teammates," said Estes. "All three are motivators who lead by example and have competed since they were freshmen."

DeOssie, a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation's top defensive player, will anchor the Bears' defense from the linebacker position. One of the dominating linebackers in the nation, DeOssie is a two-time first team All-Ivy and All-New England selection. He was ranked in the Top 10 nationally in four different national defensive categories - total tackles, solo tackles, forced fumbles and tackles for a loss, and was tied for the team lead in tackles with 80, including 12 tackles for a loss and five quarterback sacks.

DiGiacomo was an honorable mention All-Ivy quarterback a year ago after completing 121 of 231 passes for 1,800 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2005. His 3,314 career passing yards rank fourth in the Brown record book, while his 233 career completions rank fifth in the Brown record book. His 20 career touchdown passes rank seventh in the Brown record book.

Markey was a special teams leader in 2005, and will look to step into the tailback position for the Bears. Playing behind the nation's top rusher, Markey ran for 145 yards on 29 carries, including a 39-yard scamper against Rhode Island. On special teams, he registered a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown.
