Providence, RI - On a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium, the 2008 Ivy League Champion Brown football team culminated 11 days of spring practice with the annual Brown-White Spring Game, with the White team coming away with a 7-0 victory. For the second year in a row, the only scoring was on an interception return for a touchdown, as rising senior defensive back David Clement returned a pick 48 yards for the deciding score in the second quarter.
In a game that was a defensive standoff, it was only fitting that the defense did the scoring as well. On a first-and-10 pass from rising sophomore Patrick Pakan, Clement jumped an out route, picking off the pass and running 48 yards to paydirt for the game's lone score. The extra point by rising senior Drew Pichta provided the final 7-0 margin.
The white team's victory came largely due to its ability to force turnovers, picking off two passes and forcing a fumble over the course of the three quarters played. Near the end of the first half, it appeared that the Brown team would tie the game, marching up the field on a long drive. After 11 plays, Brown had first-and-goal on the eight. A rush by rising senior quarterback Ryley Hegarty went for one yard, and his incompletion on second down made it third-and-seven. A penalty pushed the Brown team back 10 yards, but on the next play, rising sophomore Nathanial Thomas picked off Hegarty's pass, returning it 62 yards to the Brown 30-yard line.
Despite the interception, Hegarty was arguably the offensive star of the game, completing 12 of 19 pass attempts for 114 yards. He split time with Pakan, who completed five of 13 passes for 47 yards and ran for 30 more yards on four carries. Brown team rising junior running back Zachary Tronti led all rushers with 51 yards on 16 carries.
On defense, the White team's rising senior defensive lineman, Kelley Cox, had a game-high seven tackles. The White defense's third turnover came on a forced fumble by rising senior captain James Develin, with rising sophomore Joseph Rettig recovering the loose ball. White's rising junior Clayton McGrath had a game-high 1 1/2 sacks, with Brown rising senior Michael Lemmons and White's Develin registering one apiece and Brown rising junior William Rulifson notching half a sack.
