Providence, RI - Head coach Phil Estes will begin initial preparation for Brown's 124th season of intercollegiate football with 12 days of Spring Football Practice, beginning April 5th and culminating with the Annual Brown vs. White Spring Game on May 4th.
Since 1994, no team in the Ivy League has been able to match Brown's success. The Bears' 53-26 (.671) record over the last eight years, makes Brown football the most prosperous football program in the Ivy League. Last year's 5-2 Ivy League record (6-3 overall) has been bettered only three times in Brown history, with five other Bears' teams equaling that mark.
Estes returns a lot of weapons on the offensive side of the ball, but he will be looking for a new quarterback to run Brown's high-powered offense, replacing graduated Kyle Rowley. Junior Nate Poole and junior Kyle Slager, a transfer from Arizona, are the front-runners to direct the Bears' complex offensive machine. Whoever gets the nod will have the fortune of throwing to All-American and Payton Award finalist Chas Gessner, who led the nation in receiving yards, and ranked second nationally in receptions per game.
Brown's much-improved defensive unit returns eight starters, including its entire linebacking corps. Senior Joel Barone, an honorable mention All-American and second team All-Ivy selection, came off the bench to lead the Ivy League and rank sixth nationally in tackles, making 12.9 tackles per game for the Bears, finishing with 103 tackles (53 solo, 50 assists).
